The failure had a domestic ordinariness that makes it universal: during some rewiring at home, the family's network drive — a single-bay 3TB "personal cloud" unit — was moved to a small table, and fell off it. Fully functional before; afterwards, a precise and repeatable performance: approximately ten beeps after power-up, no sound of the disks spinning at any point, then silence. The stakes were stated with equal precision and proportion: family and personal data, not business-critical but important, just under 3TB of it. And the question was the practical one: what would assessment and repair cost?

Decoding the ten beeps — and the second problem hiding behind the first

A drive that beeps instead of spinning is running a tug-of-war: the motor is being commanded to turn platters that something is gripping, and each beep is the electrical strain of an attempt that loses — around ten tries here before the firmware conceded, which is the retry-budget pattern this archive documents on drives from every doorway. After a drop, the gripping something is almost always the drive's own heads: jolted from their parking ramp at the wrong instant, they land on platter surfaces smooth enough that molecular adhesion holds harder than the motor's starting torque. It's the fall's classic injury, and — caught early, unforced — among the most benign, because the heads are stuck, not broken, and the platters beneath them untouched. The second problem waits behind the first: this class of unit is an appliance, meaning its data doesn't sit on the drive as a plug-in-and-read volume but inside the box's own Linux-native wrapping — system partitions, a container layer, the family's files innermost — so even a mechanically healed drive answers a desktop with foreign structures and dangerous "initialise?" offers. Both problems were on the job sheet from intake; the customer's cost question got its answer there too: assessment free, then one fixed figure for the whole of both.

The recovery — release, image, unwrap

Under laminar airflow the heads were lifted vertically from the surfaces — never dragged — inspected and found to have survived their adhesion, and reseated on their ramp; the platters showed clean at the contact points, ten strained beeps having cost far less than ten hopeful power-cycles would have. Convalescent imaging came before celebration: the full 3TB banked onto an image on the PC-3000, coverage closing effectively complete. Then the unwrapping, performed on the image: the appliance's partitions enumerated, its container layer assembled exactly as the unit's own firmware would have, and the family's volume opened innermost — just under 3TB of photos, documents and the accumulated household record, verified and delivered on a plain external drive in a format any of their computers reads directly. No replacement appliance required to get at their own data ever again — which, the delivery note observed, is a feature worth keeping.

Outcome

Full recovery of both the drive and the data from behind its appliance wrapping — and two domestic morals, sized to the case. The placement one: network drives run all day and get moved rarely, which makes them exactly the objects that end up perched somewhere temporary during home works — and a running drive's fall is the worst kind, heads airborne over spinning platters. During any rewiring, redecorating or router-shuffling: power the unit down first, move it second, and give it a floor-level or shelf-secured home where ladders and cables can't find it. And the proportion one, offered because the enquiry modelled it: "important but not business-critical" deserves protection scaled accordingly — one plain-drive copy of the family archive, refreshed occasionally, converts the next fall from a recovery case into a shrug.

Dropped network drives and beeping units

Stop power-cycling at the first beep — each attempt strains stuck heads against the platters holding them, and the tenth retry teaches nothing the second didn't. Don't shuck the drive into a desktop and accept initialise offers; appliance data is wrapped in layers a computer misreads as emptiness. Power down, note the beep pattern and the drop's height and surface, and bring the whole unit. Stuck heads released professionally are a footnote; forced ones are a different page entirely.
