Hard drive not recognised? We can recover it.

When a drive connects but your computer, laptop or Mac cannot see it, the data is usually still there. Our engineers repair the firmware, electronics or file system, and recover your data in-house.

If it says “needs formatting”, don't.

A drive that shows as RAW, “needs formatting” or “not initialised” usually still holds all of your data — formatting or initialising it can overwrite what is recoverable. Don't run repair tools that write to the drive, and don't keep reconnecting a drive with failing hardware. Power it down and talk to us.

// our recovery process

How we recover an undetected drive.

Getting a drive recognised again can mean repairing firmware, hardware or a file system. We find the real fault, fix it, then read your data back — carefully, in the right order.

01

Free diagnostic

Bring in or post your drive. We work out whether it is a firmware, hardware, board or file-system fault, and send a written quote — usually within 48 hours.

02

Check connection and electronics

We rule out the cable, port and bridge first, and on external drives bypass the enclosure to test the bare drive directly.

03

Repair the firmware

Where the drive cannot initialise, we use specialist tools to access and repair its internal service area so it is recognised again.

04

Repair the hardware

Where the drive cannot read its own setup data, we fit matched heads or a board from our inventory — no waiting weeks for a donor to arrive.

05

Image the drive

Once it is detected, we clone the drive sector by sector to stable storage, working patiently around any weak areas.

06

Rebuild and recover

We reconstruct any corrupt partition or file system, rebuild your files, and return your data on fresh media.

07

Backup Drive or Download

We backup your data to either an external drive and ship it back to you, or we also offer a free download service for your data up to 75GB.

// parts inventory

10,000 donor parts on the shelf.

Matching heads and boards in-house, plus specialist firmware tools, means most undetected drives move straight to repair — no waiting weeks for a donor to be sourced.

Seagate 2 TB3.5" desktop HDDNot detected

Desktop drive that vanished from the BIOS overnight.

Service-area firmware corruption. We accessed and repaired the firmware with specialist tools, the drive re-initialised, and we imaged it on the first pass.

WD My Book 4 TB3.5" USB driveNot recognised

External drive that stopped showing up on a Mac.

The fault was a failed USB bridge, not the drive. We bypassed the enclosure, connected the bare drive, and it was perfectly healthy.

Toshiba 1 TB2.5" laptop HDDNeeds formatting

Laptop drive that suddenly showed as needing formatting.

Corrupt partition and file system after a bad shutdown. We imaged the drive and rebuilt the file system to extract the data intact.

My external drive was not recognised on my Mac. It turned out to be the case, not the drive. They recovered all of my files quickly and cheaply.

// sending your device in

Two simple steps.

Send us your device for a free diagnostic, and tell us a little about what happened — an engineer will review it and confirm your exact quote in writing before any work begins.

1

Send us your device

Recovering your data starts with getting the device to us. Pack it safely, add your contact details, and send it over — after we run a free diagnostic, we’ll confirm your exact price in writing before any work begins.

How to pack it
  • Package the device into a small, sturdy box or padded envelope.
  • Leave out caddies, cables and power supplies — we won’t need them for the recovery.
  • Include your details inside the package: name, address, phone and email — on a slip of paper, or use our shipping form — then seal it up.

// frequently asked questions

Not recognised, answered.

The questions we are asked most about drives that are not detected or recognised.

A drive can fail to show up for several reasons — corrupted firmware, weak heads, a failed board, a dead external bridge, or a corrupt partition. The good news is that the data itself is usually still intact and recoverable; it is the drive's ability to report itself that has failed, not the files.

If the drive powers and spins but the computer cannot see it, the problem is usually the firmware or service area, or failing heads that can no longer read the drive's own setup data. We use specialist tools to access and repair this so the drive initialises again.

No — do not format it. “Needs formatting”, RAW or “not initialised” almost always means a corrupt partition or file system, and your data is still there. Formatting or initialising can overwrite it. We rebuild the file system and recover your files instead.

Very often it is the enclosure, not the drive. A failed USB-to-SATA bridge stops the computer detecting the drive even when the drive inside is perfectly healthy. We bypass the enclosure and connect the bare drive directly to find out.

In most cases, yes. Whether the fault is firmware, hardware or a corrupt file system, we repair what is needed and recover your data. A drive that simply will not show up is routine work for us.

Our standard price is £300 + VAT. You get a free, written diagnostic first, and on most jobs it is no fix, no fee. Straightforward firmware or file-system fixes may be quoted lower, and anything more involved is always confirmed in writing before we start.

Most not-recognised recoveries are completed within 3 to 4 working days once you approve the quote, and the initial diagnostic is usually finished within 48 hours. Urgent cases can often be prioritised — just let us know.

Every major manufacturer, including Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba, Samsung, HGST, Hitachi, Maxtor, Fujitsu, IBM, Quantum, SanDisk, LaCie, G-Technology, Buffalo, Verbatim, ADATA, Transcend, Silicon Power, Iomega, UnionSine, ModusTech and Intenso — in both 3.5-inch desktop and 2.5-inch laptop and external form factors.

You can drop it off at our Bristol location Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm, or post it to us fully insured. Ensure the drive is packaged and sealed, include your full contact details inside the package including Name, Address, Phone Number and Email Address so we can fully book in your drive. Once we have it, we will run the free diagnostic and send you a written quote before any work begins.
