One warning, one shutdown: the knocked-over My Book that met the most decisive customer in this archive

Most cases here feature warnings ignored for weeks; this one features a warning honoured in seconds. His WD My Book was knocked over; afterwards it appeared to work — some files read fine — until a "Bad Block" error surfaced in Event Viewer, at which point he shut it down. One event, one decision. Why the speed mattered more than the symptom

The post-knock sequence he interrupted is one this archive documents at every later stage: a jolted drive limps convincingly, its bruised heads reading most things while quietly failing on others; the failures accrue; repair tools get invited; and by the time it arrives at a lab, the surfaces carry weeks of forced labour. The recovery

The entrance structures were rebuilt on the copy from the volume's redundant records, and the photograph collection came off effectively complete, verified across its albums, delivered on new media. No donor parts, no surgery: the fastest correct reaction in the archive earned its matching recovery.

Outcome

Some pages here teach through cautionary tales; this one teaches through its absence of one. After a knock, watch for the first warning

If a dropped or knocked drive seems fine, verify gently and briefly — and treat the first bad-block event, error, or odd noise as the stop signal, not the start of troubleshooting. Decline format and repair prompts; they write into exactly the damage. Keep encrypted externals whole — enclosure, board and drive together. And log-watchers take note: Event Viewer's disk warnings are the earliest tripwire Windows offers. He proved what reading them in real time is worth.
