Unallocated is not erased: the two-word Windows verdict that terrifies families unnecessarily
The enquiry came from a son-in-law doing the family's technical worrying: his father-in-law's 2TB My Passport Ultra — the home of all the family photos — powered up, appeared in Disk Management as "2TB, unallocated," and refused to initialise with "the device is not ready." To anyone reading that screen cold, unallocated sounds like a synonym for empty. It isn't, and this page exists mostly to say so.

The decode, in one paragraph
"2TB unallocated" is Windows describing two different facts and letting them read as one. The 2TB came easily: a drive's size is part of its self-introduction, served by the electronics without reading a single sector of content. The unallocated is where the trouble hid: to report what's on the drive, Windows must actually read its opening sectors — and this drive, its reads failing at the firmware level, served nothing. Faced with a container whose contents it cannot read, Windows doesn't say "unreadable"; it says "unallocated," the same word it would use for a factory-fresh blank — and helpfully offers to initialise it, which is the one write that would begin making the description true. The family's decline of that offer, and the drive's own "not ready" refusals, meant the photos sat exactly where they'd always been: present, indexed, and merely unreachable from any desk.
The recovery, and the answer to both his questions

Seeing "unallocated" on a drive that was full
Don't initialise, don't create a new volume, don't format "to get it working again" — every one of those writes fresh emptiness over readable history. Don't run partition-recovery software against a drive that's also throwing "not ready" errors; that's a hardware conversation, not a software one.
