This enquiry contained a sentence labs rarely receive: "I understand that information in those sectors is now permanently lost." After his 1TB drive failed mid-edit with clicking sounds, the owner had unscrewed the lid, examined the interior, and found concentric thin scratches near the outer edge of the top platter — which he'd photographed, offering the pictures with his enquiry. What scoring means — his understanding, confirmed and completed
His core reading was right and is worth stating plainly for every reader: concentric scratches are the one wound this trade cannot heal. They mark where a failed head ploughed the recording layer from the surface — the data there isn't locked or scrambled but physically absent, and no equipment anywhere reverses that. Two completions, though, that his lid-off view couldn't supply. First, the accounting: a drive of this construction carries four recording surfaces across its two platters, so visible scoring on the top surface condemned, by itself, only that surface's share — the fate of the other three was an open question his photographs couldn't answer. Second, the hazards his honesty let us manage rather than discover: scoring sheds hard debris that migrates to healthy surfaces, and an opening outside filtered air adds ambient contamination on top — both survivable, both demanding that the drive's next spin-up happen only after a professional clean, and never at home. The triage, surface by surface
Under laminar airflow the drive was decontaminated and fully inspected: the top surface exactly as photographed — scored, condemned, its head equally finished — and the remaining three surfaces, examined at last, clean. The recovery was then built around that map: a donor head-stack fitted, the destroyed surface excluded from all operations so its debris field and dead territory could harm nothing further, and Data Extractor imaging the three healthy surfaces to near-complete coverage. A genuine, substantial, honestly-bounded partial recovery — delivered to the one customer in a hundred who'd already made his peace with its shape before asking.
