Cold, it worked — briefly: the temperature-dependent drive, and the myth this page exists to retire
This customer had run a genuine experiment and reported it precisely: his 2TB WD Green, connected via a dock, was detectable but barely usable — files "occasionally accessible for a brief period," painfully slow. Cooling the drive bought a short window of access; as it warmed to room temperature, it clicked and went unresponsive. Never, he noted, was the window long enough to back the drive up fully. He'd found, by honest observation, the doorstep of data recovery's most famous folk remedy — and stopped on the doorstep, which is why this page ends well.

Why cold helps — and why that's a trap, not a technique
His observation was real physics. A drive's heads read within tolerances measured in nanometres, and a head assembly degrading out of specification can be nudged briefly back inside it by temperature: cooling contracts and stiffens the mechanism's geometry just enough that marginal components hold their line for a few minutes. As the drive warms, the geometry relaxes back out of tolerance and the clicking resumes — his exact cycle, mechanism and all. So why isn't "keep it cold" a recovery method? Three compounding reasons the folk version never mentions. Condensation: a cold drive in room air grows moisture, and a freezer-chilled one grows it inside, onto platters where a single droplet under a flying head is a crash. Fatigue: every cold-warm cycle flexes a mechanism already failing, and the windows shrink cycle by cycle — the trick consumes the very margin it exploits. And the frantic-copy problem he'd already lived: a few cold minutes at crawling speeds invites panicked, interrupted, repeated grabs at 2TB of data, which is a workload profile designed to finish the drive. Cooling was a superb diagnostic — it localised the fault to thermal-sensitive mechanics with desk-level equipment — and a terrible therapy. He'd used it as exactly the former.
The recovery, done at room temperature
The professional version of his discovery ignores the thermometer, because it replaces the component the temperature was flattering. Under laminar airflow the marginal head-stack — reading only when chilled into line — was exchanged for a healthy donor assembly with tolerance to spare at any temperature; the rebuilt drive came ready on the PC-3000 with its self-maintenance silenced, and Data Extractor imaged the full 2TB in comfortable, uninterrupted room-temperature passes — the backup his cold windows could never complete, done once and completely. His files came off the image verified; the whole exchange ran by email at the unhurried pace his "no urgency" had set, and the drive retired from both duty and refrigeration.

Treat the observation as diagnostic gold and the temptation as a tax: no freezer, no ice packs, no racing the thermometer with a copy window. Note the behaviour — how long the window, what changes, what sounds — power down, and let the fix address the component rather than its climate.
