Dry it and try it: the water-accident sequence everyone's instinct writes — and the bench work that unwrites it

Her account was admirably complete, which matters, because every step shaped what the bench later found. The external drive fell into water "for a few seconds." She immediately opened the case, found "just some humidity," and dried the drive with a hairdryer for a few hours. Why each instinctive step points the wrong way

Drying feels like the cure because water feels like the poison — but water was never the main enemy. What water leaves behind is: every drop carries dissolved minerals and, from a sink or floor, whatever else was in it, and when the liquid evaporates those passengers stay — as conductive, corrosive films on circuit boards and as microscopic deposits on any internal surface the moisture reached. A hairdryer accelerates exactly that: hours of warm airflow don't remove the contamination, they bake it on, while driving damp air deeper into places it hadn't yet reached and adding heat stress to components already compromised. Opening the case while wet gave the moisture and the room's dust a formal invitation inside. And the test connection was the true gamble: electricity across residue-coated electronics is how corroded traces become burnt ones — her drive's brief noise-then-silence was it attempting a start across compromised circuitry and standing itself down, which, in the catalogue of possible endings to that test, was one of the kindest. The recovery

The board came off for full decontamination — the baked-on films chemically cleaned from its surfaces, its damaged protection components made good — while under laminar airflow the internals were inspected and the residue the hairdryer had set was lifted from where the moisture had crept, the platter surfaces cleaned to flying standard. The mechanics, spared a longer powered fight by the drive's own quick surrender, proved serviceable; reassembled and brought up on the PC-3000 on current-limited power, the drive completed its first clean start since the accident, and Data Extractor imaged it steadily to near-complete coverage — nothing left for a second session on a patient with this history.
