When the clicking stops: a My Passport for Mac that got quieter as it got worse

Symptoms that disappear feel like improvement — it's how we're built. This 4TB My Passport, resident on a desk for a year and never mistreated, stopped mounting on its owner's MacBook Pro; for a while it clicked when connected, and then the clicking stopped and only the gentle sound of spin-up remained. “When I connect it to my MacBook Pro I can hear it starting up, but it does not mount. At one point there was a clicking sound, but that sound has now stopped. Why silence after clicking is the worse chapter

Clicking is a drive still trying: heads sweeping for calibration data, failing, resetting, sweeping again. When the clicking stops but the fault remains, the drive hasn't recovered — it has concluded. Modern firmware gives a failing head a budget of attempts and then stops spending: the drive spins placidly, goes through the motions, and quietly declines to bring a surface it can no longer trust into service. The progression this customer heard — intermittent clicking hardening into resigned silence — is the natural history of a head failing by degrees on a drive that was never touched, which is most of them; a year of faithful desk duty is simply a year of flight hours. On the bench the story checked out precisely: one head degraded past use, the drive's own logs recording its slide from marginal to abandoned; the remaining heads healthy; platters, as the gentle symptoms suggested, immaculate.

The recovery

A dead head among living ones on a USB-native, hardware-encrypting Passport sets a familiar course, run with care rather than drama. The drive's firmware state was secured first over the PC-3000 through the USB Stabilizer — ROM and service modules backed up, self-maintenance retired. A donor head-stack from the matching family went in under laminar airflow, and Data Extractor imaged the drive per-head: the surfaces that had never faltered read out swiftly and nearly flawlessly; the failed head's surface, now flown by its transplanted successor, gave up its territory across patient additional passes. The encryption this family performs in hardware was resolved with the drive's own key material as the image completed, and the customer's HFS+ volume — this was a Mac drive through and through — mounted from the decrypted image with its folder structure intact.

Outcome

The full archive — the photographs, the video, the estimated two-and-a-half terabytes proving to be almost exactly that — verified and delivered on a new drive, formatted for his Mac and ready to plug in. His restraint earned a footnote in its own case file: at the moment the clicking stopped, the tempting read was "it's settled down," and the natural next move a few more hopeful reconnections. Every one of those would have been a working session for a drive already down to seven heads and no margin. He asked instead. It's the cheapest diagnostic step there is.

Interpreting a drive's noises — and its silences

New clicking: power off, seek help. Clicking that stops while the fault persists: treat it as escalation, not recovery — the drive has stopped trying, and so should you. And note what this case disproves: drives do not require an incident to fail. "Never dropped, never moved" describes most of the failed drives on our bench. Age and hours are incident enough; the backup is the only prevention.
