The drive that worked at one angle: a fractured USB port, rebuilt under the microscope, and a thesis on deadline
Urgency has a particular flavour when there's a submission date attached. This 4TB My Passport carried around 2TB of experimental data from the final studies of a PhD — the original files, wanted for the last stretch of writing up — and it had developed the most misunderstood fault in portable storage: it worked, briefly and perfectly, if held in exactly the right position, and not otherwise. A local computer shop had taken a look and, to their credit, gone no further.

What position-sensitivity always means
A drive whose detection depends on angle and pressure is describing its fault with perfect clarity: the electrical connection between cable and board is broken, and the "right position" is the one that presses the fracture closed. On this family the connector is soldered directly to the drive's own USB-native board, its handful of fine signal joints and shell anchors taking every insertion, every yank, every dangle off a desk — until one day the joints crack. The drive behind those joints is typically in flawless health, which is both the good news and the trap: the fault invites use. Find the angle, prop the cable, copy frantically while the light holds. Every one of those flexing sessions works the fracture, and the failure ladder runs from cracked joints (a clean rework) to lifted pads and torn traces (a much harder one). She'd stopped climbing it early, which mattered.
The repair, and then — immediately — the copy
Under the microscope the diagnosis was visible: fractured solder at the connector's signal row, the classic fatigue pattern. The rework was conventional bench work done carefully — the connector lifted, pads dressed, a replacement fitted with sound joints and its mechanical anchors reinforced so the next thousand insertions land on metal rather than solder — and every line verified for continuity before the drive saw a host.
Then the rule that turns a repair into a recovery: a fixed connector earns one job, and that job is a complete copy, now. The drive came up through the USB Stabilizer and was imaged in full — mechanically it proved exactly as healthy as position-sensitivity predicts, the image running clean end to end — and the deliverable was prepared from the image in Data Extractor: her ~2TB experimental data set, directory structure intact, verified, and turned around against her deadline. Given the stakes, verification went one step further than usual — the delivered set checked file-for-file against the drive's own records, so what went back to her desk was the original data, demonstrably complete, not a hopeful approximation of it.
Outcome
Full recovery, delivered inside the write-up window, with the repaired drive returned on the strict understanding it was now a courier, not a home — its contents to live henceforth on the new media and the existing backups. She was, it should be said, the rare customer who had backups and still taught a useful lesson: originals matter, deadlines compress everything, and the fault that "still sort of works" is the one that tempts people into destroying it. If your drive only connects at an angle
Stop finding the angle. Each flex-and-copy session fatigues the fracture further, and the difference between re-soldering a connector and rebuilding torn pads is the difference between a routine job and a hard one. Don't wedge, tape or lean things against the cable — disconnect it, note the symptom, and have the joint rebuilt properly. The drive inside is almost certainly fine, and it deserves to stay that way.
