It only tipped over: a 2TB Toshiba external, a lifetime of photos, and the smallest fall that counts

There's a category of impact case where the owner half-apologises for the story — "it didn't even hit the floor." This upright desktop external simply tipped from vertical onto its side, a fall of a few inches. But it was running when it happened, and to a hard drive at speed, a few inches is plenty. Afterwards: the lamp lit, Windows showed a USB device, the safely-remove icon appeared — and the drive itself clicked and never showed up.

The enquiry

“The drive stands upright and one day it tipped onto its side — it didn't crash to the floor, maybe this was the problem. Now it doesn't fully connect: the lamp lights up, a clicking sound is heard, and I get the USB icon with 'Safely Remove Hardware', but the drive doesn't appear in File Explorer. I bought a new mains adapter and a new USB cable, which made no difference. Most of my photos are stored on it.”

Why Windows half-saw it — and why the new cables were never going to work

The symptoms he described were quietly diagnostic. An external enclosure is two devices in a box: a USB bridge that talks to the computer, and the bare hard drive behind it. The USB icon and eject option meant the bridge was alive and introducing itself perfectly well; the absence of any actual drive in File Explorer meant the disk behind the bridge wasn't answering — and the clicking said why. That's also the kind epitaph for the new adapter and cable: entirely reasonable purchases, aimed at the only parts of the system a customer can reach, and irrelevant to a mechanical injury sealed inside. The tip-over, arriving while the platters spun and the heads flew, had done what operational impacts do — the heads took the hit.

The recovery

Out of its enclosure and under laminar airflow, the drive confirmed the reading: head-stack damage from the impact, platter surfaces — the years of photographs — clean. A donor head-stack matching this drive family and generation was fitted at the bench; on the PC-3000 the rebuilt drive came ready with firmware intact, its self-maintenance was stood down, and Data Extractor imaged it with the transplanted-heads discipline: the willing majority of the surface banked in early passes, the stubborn regions negotiated at the end. From the completed image the photo archive was extracted — the accumulated folders of many years — and verified before delivery on new media.

Outcome

The archive recovered essentially whole. The case earns its place in these files for the physics lesson its owner had already intuited: severity of fall and severity of damage are not the same scale, and the variable that matters most is whether the drive was running. A powered-off portable can shrug off worse than this; a spinning desktop drive can be ended by a tip onto its own side. Upright enclosures on busy desks are a small standing wager — and mains-powered desktop externals full of a life's photos deserve better odds than that.

Lay tall enclosures flat, or site them where nothing — cables, elbows, pets — can tip them while they're running. If one does go over in operation and then clicks or vanishes: power it off at once, skip the new-cable stage of grief, and don't keep reconnecting it to check. The bridge showing up while the drive doesn't is your answer, not your puzzle.
