Two dead devices, one set of files, one very good question: "which would be easier to recover from?"

Most enquiries bring one patient; this one brought two, and the smartest question in the archive. Her WD My Passport — Disk Management verdict: uninitialized — held the backup of her photos and videos. The desktop it backed up had "also recently stopped working," its internal SSD holding the same files. Rather than commissioning a recovery of either, she asked the triage question outright: the same files are on both — which would be easier to recover from? The answer determined the whole shape — and most of the cost — of what followed.

The triage — and the finding that changed the bill

Both patients were assessed, free, in parallel, because her question can only be answered with facts from each. The Passport's story was the familiar one: a real fault inside the drive — its firmware-level structures degraded to where Windows, unable to read what was there, filed it under "uninitialized" (that word meaning can't read, never empty, as other pages in this archive labour to say). Recoverable, routinely — but a chargeable recovery. The desktop's story was better: the machine's failure to start traced to the computer itself, not its storage — and the SSD, extracted and read write-blocked on the bench, proved simply healthy: files present, filesystem clean, every photo and video opening. Which made the honest answer to her question almost embarrassingly cheap: the "recovery" was a direct copy from a working drive that had merely been trapped inside a broken computer. Her data was verified against what she knew she had, delivered on new media — and the Passport's paid recovery was recommended against, in writing, as unnecessary: the same files now existed safe, and the fee would have purchased duplicates.

The part worth generalising: correlated failure

Before the reassuring ending settles, the unsettling middle deserves its paragraph — because for a window of days, both copies of her data sat behind failed hardware simultaneously. Backup-and-original dying together is less coincidental than it feels: paired devices share a desk, a power strip, a surge, a house's heat and humidity, and — most commonly — a timetable, ageing side by side from the same purchase era. Two copies in one room is enormously better than one copy, and still one shared bad day from zero. The standard answer is boring and correct: three copies, two different media, one somewhere else — the cloud, a drive at a relative's, anywhere the shared bad day can't reach. Her close call cost her nothing but the fright; its lesson is the cheapest thing in this case file.

Outcome

Full recovery via the healthy patient; the faulty one honestly declined on her behalf; total spend, a fraction of the double-recovery she'd braced for. When backup and original fail together

Don't commission recovery on either device until both are assessed — a dead computer very often shelters a perfectly healthy drive, and that's the cheap route home. Say up front that the data is duplicated; it changes the plan in your favour. Once recovered, rebuild to three copies with one off-site — paired devices fail on shared timetables. And keep the faulty spare's diagnosis in writing: it's tomorrow's warranty claim.
