The decode: why a foreign board makes a healthy drive click

Every drive leaves its factory individually calibrated: the microscopic particulars of its heads over its platters are measured and written into a small chip on the circuit board — the ROM — and the drive reads correctly only through that unique prescription. A second-hand PCB carries a different drive's prescription. Fit it, and the mechanics receive power (hence his years-silent drive waking at all — the swap genuinely fixed the electrical fault) but the heads fly out wearing someone else's glasses: seeking positions calibrated for another machine, failing the opening reads, retreating, retrying — click, click, click, indistinguishable by ear from dying heads, produced here by heads in perfect health following the wrong instructions.
