Her enquiry had the two ingredients this archive values most: precise observation and honest stakes. The external drive had been dropped; since then it ran a fixed loop — the disk starts to spin, then several clicks, then eventually it powers down and stops — and she was, in her own words, quite desperate to recover the photos, though it "would be amazing" if everything came back. The cycle, act by act

Act one — the spin. Motor energises, platters come up to speed: the drive's foundation reporting fit. A drive that spins has a working board, a willing motor, an intact power path — the fall spared all of it. Act two — the clicks. With the platters turning, the heads sweep out to read the calibration data that turns a spinning machine into a storage device — and fail, return, and try again, each sweep-and-retreat one audible click. The recovery
