Out of the fire: a work laptop's drive, salvaged in the right order

What fire does to a drive — a triage in three layers
A hard drive meets a fire as three concentric zones of vulnerability. Outermost, the electronics: the exposed circuit board takes the heat, the smoke and the extinguishing chemistry directly, and is very frequently the outright casualty — as here, where the board's condition explained the failed detection entirely by itself. Middle, the mechanics: heads and lubricant age harshly in heat, surviving or not according to how hot, how long. Innermost — and this is the whole basis for hope — the platters, sealed inside a metal enclosure that acts as a fire safe in miniature: the magnetic recording itself withstands temperatures far beyond what leaves a laptop recognisable, so if the enclosure kept its seal, the data typically outlived everything around it. Which frames the one hard rule his understandable direct-connection attempt had brushed against: a fire-exposed drive must not be powered until it's been decontaminated and assessed — soot is conductive, extinguisher residue is corrosive, and electricity through either finishes work the fire left undone. He'd been lucky; the dead board had answered nothing and therefore risked nothing. The luck was retired at intake.
The recovery, in the order fire demands
Cleaning came first — the drive exterior and board decontaminated to stop soot and residue's slow chemistry, then the verdicts. Electronics: beyond economic repair, so the drive's identity — its calibration ROM, which had survived on the dead board as it usually does — was transferred under the microscope to matched replacement electronics. Interior: opened under laminar airflow, the seal proved to have held; surfaces clean, mechanics heat-stressed but serviceable. Storage recovered from a fire
Never power fire-exposed devices — detection attempts through contaminated electronics are the second fire. Keep drives dry (corrosion from damp soot and extinguisher residue is progressive), don't open anything, and don't discard drives that look destroyed: exterior condition badly under-predicts what the sealed interior kept.
