Where CF differs — and why that helped

Her team's methodical elimination — good card, multiple readers, multiple hosts — had localised the fault correctly: the card itself, and specifically its controller, the small computer inside every card that presents the memory to the world. The organisational lessons travel: an in-house engineering team knowing exactly when to stop is an asset, not a failure — their restraint left a clean patient; a card's contents should be treated as unknown-and-assumed-precious the moment it misbehaves, because "I don't know what's on it" resolves, more often than not, to everything since the last offload; and working CF stock deserves age-management — the format's ruggedness is real, but its controllers retire on their own schedule, and a professional's card wallet should too.

For CF card users — a dwindling, valuable tribe

When a CF card stops mounting, stop after two or three reader attempts; the fault is in the card and repetition adds nothing. Don't format it back into service in-camera — the contents survive the controller's death and deserve extraction first. Retire cards proactively after heavy professional service, and offload shoots the same day: the format is tough, but no card format was ever an archive.
