Cut mid-sentence: a camera's power failure, a card in disgrace, and the clip that was never allowed to end
This enquiry described a failure sequence every action-camera owner eventually meets: the GoPro powered itself down while recording, and from that moment the card was in disgrace — the camera showing "SD card error," the Mac showing nothing at all. What dying mid-recording actually breaks
A camera writing video is running two processes at once: streaming the footage itself onto the card, and continuously updating the paperwork — the filesystem's allocation records, and the growing video file's own internal index, which the camera writes properly only when a recording is stopped. Kill the power mid-clip and both are abandoned mid-sentence: the filesystem's books don't balance, and the final clip exists as a long stream of genuine footage with no closing index to tell any player what it is. Cameras and computers meeting that state don't distinguish "one unfinished file" from "broken card" — they see paperwork that fails its checks and refuse the lot, which is exactly the disgrace his card was in. The crucial reassurance inside the mechanics: every previous clip, closed properly in its day, sat complete and untouched; and even the interrupted clip's footage was on the card in full up to the instant the power died. Nothing was missing. One thing was unfinished.
The recovery — including the clip that never got to end
The card was imaged write-blocked and the work ran on the copy. The filesystem's abandoned paperwork was reconciled first — allocation records balanced against the card's actual contents — which restored the library wholesale: every prior recording present, named, playable. Then the interrupted clip got its ending written at last: its orphaned footage stream located and bounded, and the missing internal index rebuilt from the stream's own structure — frame timing, track layout, the anatomy a finished file would have declared — until the file played as the camera would have closed it, running clean from its first frame to the very moment the battery gave out, ending mid-scene the honest way rather than not existing at all. The full set was verified by playback sampling and delivered; the card, having thrown its error, was retired on principle.
Outcome
Everything recovered, including the one file the failure was actively writing — a better result than "everything except the clip that mattered that day," which is where the DIY version of this story usually lands, because repair utilities pointed at that fragile paperwork tend to balance the books by discarding the unfinished entry. His restraint made the clean version possible, and earns the closing advice its credibility: on action cameras, treat low battery as a stop-recording event, not a race — the last thirty seconds you grab on a dying cell are the thirty seconds most likely to take the whole card's paperwork down with them. Stop, save, then squeeze the battery on playback instead.
Camera died while recording
Take the card out and leave it alone — no in-camera "repair" offers, no chkdsk, no recovery apps writing back to it. The previous clips are almost certainly intact, and the interrupted one is usually rebuildable from its own stream. And make it rarer: batteries swapped at the warning rather than the death, and recordings stopped before lens changes, mounts and clumsy moments — the card's paperwork is only ever fragile mid-sentence.
