Smoke on standby: a swollen battery, a cooked laptop, and the drive that came through it

The unsettling part of this enquiry was how little its owner had done to cause it. The laptop wasn't charging. It wasn't in use. What heat does to a drive — and what it usually doesn't

A battery thermal event bathes everything around it in temperatures laptops were never specified to meet, and a hard drive takes that bath unevenly. The most heat-sensitive residents suffer first: the electronics can cook, the bearing's lubricant can thin and migrate, and the heads — already the frailest components in any drive — age years in minutes. What generally endures is the part that matters: the platters themselves are thermally robust far beyond the surrounding plastic's tolerance, and the magnetic patterns on them — the data — survive heat that ruins everything tasked with reading them. Her drive followed the pattern to the letter: board inspected and proven serviceable after the smoke's chemistry was cleaned from it, spindle sound, platters unharmed under examination — and a head-stack that had come out of the sauna unable to do its job, announcing itself with the clicking she'd heard on the cautious post-incident power-up.

If a laptop, phone or power bank ever bulges, creaks at its seams, or smells hot and sweet: stop using it, stop charging it above all, don't press the swelling or puncture anything, move it onto a hard non-flammable surface away from anything that burns, and get it to proper battery disposal — not the household bin, where these events finish what they started in collection trucks. Swollen or smoking batteries

Treat any battery swelling as a live hazard: power off, unplug, don't compress it, and rehouse the device somewhere non-flammable pending proper disposal. Never bin lithium batteries.
