Credit first, because it shaped everything: this enquiry hid nothing. What a home platter transfer puts at risk — the honest list
Three separate stakes ride on that procedure, and knowing them explains the three different verdicts below. Contamination: open air deposits particles onto surfaces engineered for head flight measured in nanometres — survivable in light doses, fatal in heavy ones, and invisible until inspection. Alignment: on multi-platter drives the disks record data as a synchronised stack; let their mutual rotation slip during transfer and every subsequent read lands on a stack that no longer agrees with itself — the single most destructive slip available, because it can't be fully undone. Identity: a drive's calibration lives partly with its original electronics, so a discarded chassis-and-board is discarded identity — recoverable to a degree from the platters' own records on some families, gone on others. None of these risks announces itself at the kitchen table; the transfer "working" or "not working" at home reveals almost nothing about which have been incurred.
The triage, verdict by verdict
Drive 1 — the 7200.10 whose platters now lived in a donor with the original chassis gone — drew the era's one mercy: drives of that generation keep their critical self-knowledge substantially on the platters and tolerate matched donor electronics better than anything modern, so the missing original cost less than it would on any drive built since. Under the flow bench the transfer proved lightly contaminated but essentially true; cleaned, verified, and driven through the PC-3000, it imaged to a strong recovery with modest losses itemised. Drive 2 — the unmarked 2.5″ — drew the harder card: inspection found the transferred stack's registration imperfect, and the honest verdict was the bounded one this archive doesn't dress up — a partial recovery, real and worth having, of what the surviving alignment allowed, with the remainder declared unrecoverable in writing rather than in instalments. Drive 3 — the one nobody had opened — behaved like every unopened drive in this archive: a routine fault, a routine fix, a full recovery, and the quiet proof of the whole page's argument.
Outcome
Two recoveries and one honest partial, from a set that could easily have been three sealed routine jobs — which is the arithmetic to take away, offered without a gram of scorn for people who tried what the internet told them was tryable. Platter transfer is real and it works — as the last resort, performed with registration tooling, under filtered air, by hands that do it weekly. As a first resort at home it converts cheap faults into expensive ones and expensive ones into eulogies. Before — or after — opening a drive at home
Before: don't. The platters' alignment and cleanliness are the data, and neither survives improvisation reliably.
