"Healthy," RAW, and asking for a format: the 4TB that commuted between the PC and the TV once too often
This drive lived a double life — photo archive on the desk, media library under the television — travelling between the two as required. Its decline was polite by the standards of this archive: it took longer and longer to be recognised, was occasionally revived in the past by a Scan & Fix, and then one day appeared as "healthy" but RAW, with Windows offering a format the owner sensibly declined. The TV had stopped recognising it too. An occasional soft click, platters audibly spinning, four terabytes about 80% full — and two questions: what price bracket, and could the recovered data come back on the same drive, reformatted?

RAW, decoded — and the commuting life examined
"Healthy but RAW" is one of Windows' more confusing verdicts, so here it is unpacked: the partition is present and its container looks fine — hence "healthy" — but the filesystem inside answers gibberish when asked its name, so Windows classes it as RAW: unformatted-as-far-as-I-can-tell, would you like me to fix that? The honest translation is narrower and kinder: the structures at the volume's entrance — the signposts every mount begins with — had become unreadable on a drive whose heads were going marginal, while four terabytes of perfectly organised content sat behind the broken sign. His history filled in the trajectory: the ever-longer recognition times were the drive straining harder each month to read its own openings, the past Scan & Fix "cures" were repairs papering over that decline, and the commuting deserves its gentle mention — a drive that shuttles between hosts lives a life of unplugs mid-housekeeping (televisions are especially brusque hosts), temperature swings and transit knocks, all of it honest wear that desk-bound siblings are spared.
The recovery — and the answer to his second question
The work ran the archive's standard course for a marginal drive with damaged entrance structures: stabilised and imaged on the PC-3000 with self-maintenance retired — healthy majority first, the strained regions last — and the filesystem rebuilt on the image from its redundant deeper records, the broken signposts redrawn from the copies NTFS quietly keeps. For drives that show RAW
Decline the format — RAW means the entrance is damaged, not the building — and stop running repair utilities whose past "fixes" were the decline in disguise. If a drive splits duty between computer and TV, always eject properly and expect a shorter life; better, keep irreplaceable photos off the commuter entirely. And when recovery happens, expect the data back on new media: any firm offering to return it on the failed drive is answering the wrong question cheaply.
