"Firmware update required": the Buffalo LinkStation prompt this owner was right to refuse

Several power cuts in a row, and after the last one his LinkStation 220D simply vanished from the network. What elevates this enquiry is the troubleshooting: the owner tested his drives in a second, identical unit — methodical — got it into "emergency mode, firmware update required," and then stopped, reasoning that an update might overwrite his data. The enquiry

“During a recent power cut the drive can no longer be found on the network. I have a second 220D and the drives don't boot in that one either. If I put one 'damaged' drive in with one working drive, it finds the NAS but in emergency mode, saying a firmware update is required. I don't want to do this in case data is overwritten. I'm aware the LinkStation uses a modified Linux system, but I don't have a setup that can read it. Ideally I'd like the data recovered onto a portable SSD.”

Why the drives wouldn't boot anywhere — and why the update was the wrong door

The detail that explains everything: a LinkStation keeps its brain on your disks. The unit's operating system lives on small system partitions at the front of the very drives that hold your data — which is why healthy drives boot a second chassis happily, and why his wouldn't boot either box: the power cuts had corrupted those system partitions, and every chassis he tried was reading the same damaged pages. "Emergency mode" is Buffalo's recovery hatch for exactly this, and its offered cure — rewriting the firmware — means writing to the disks, repartitioning and reinstalling around data it makes no promises about. On empty drives, fine medicine. On the only copy of years of files, it's surgery by someone who hasn't asked what's inside. He read that risk correctly with no more to go on than caution, and caution was enough.

The recovery

With the NAS's own machinery recused, the job became straightforwardly forensic. Both members were imaged write-blocked on the TaskForce 2; the originals were retired untouched. On the images, the layout told its clean story: system partitions scrambled by the interrupted writes — the injury — and behind them the mirrored data partition, structurally sound. The RAID 1 pair was assembled virtually in Data Extractor, the two members cross-checked against each other (a mirror's quiet gift: every block has a witness), and the Linux-native data volume opened directly — the step his instincts had reached for when he mentioned needing "a Linux setup," performed here with lab tooling and a safety net. His shares came out whole: the folder tree, names and dates intact, delivered — as requested — onto a portable SSD.

Outcome

Complete recovery, no firmware update ever performed, and the moral pre-written by the customer himself: when a storage device offers to fix itself, ask what it plans to write, and where. Update, initialise, rebuild, repair — on a box holding the only copy of anything, every one of those verbs deserves the pause he gave it. And the power cuts that started it all supply the practical postscript: a NAS running years of continuous duty earns a cheap UPS, because the writes it's making at the moment the lights go out are the ones you'll meet again in a case file.

NAS unreachable after a power cut

Don't accept firmware updates, initialisation or "repair" offers on drives that hold data, and don't mix suspect drives with healthy ones in live units — every boot writes. Label the drives by bay, power everything down, and have the members imaged; on Buffalo and similar units the data volume very often survives exactly this fault intact behind damaged system partitions.
