This owner did everything a technical hobbyist reasonably could: pulled the clicking 2TB Seagate from his Iomega Home Media unit, dropped it into a Linux desktop, and reached for the toolset that usually serves him well. Two locked doors, one behind the other
His Linux experiment was the right instinct pointed at the wrong layer, and it's worth unpacking because single-bay NAS drives mislead capable people constantly. Door one was mechanical: a clicking drive can't complete its own start-up reads, so no operating system on Earth — Linux included — was ever going to get an audience; software's jurisdiction ends where the drive's ability to read begins. But door two matters for everyone who pulls a disk from a NAS enclosure: these little boxes are computers, and they format their drive in their own Linux-native arrangement — system partitions, then the data volume in the appliance's preferred filesystem. Even a perfectly healthy Home Media disk plugged into Windows shows as alien; his Linux box stood a fighting chance in principle, which is exactly why the total silence he got was diagnostic — the fault was below the filesystem, in the metal.
The recovery — and the "worth it" question, answered properly
The year unpowered had, as with other shelf-drives in these files, cost essentially nothing; stillness is neutral. Under laminar airflow the clicking resolved to its usual cause — failed heads over clean platters — and a matching donor head-stack went in at the bench. Pulling drives from NAS enclosures
Expect the disk to look unreadable on a desktop even when healthy — that's the appliance's native layout, not damage, so don't format or "initialise" it into legibility. If the drive clicks, skip the toolkit stage entirely: mechanical faults outrank every filesystem question, and each powered attempt spends surface. And a drive you're undecided about belongs on a shelf, powered off — not in a caddy, being asked.
