Rained on, powered, and left too long: recovering a dead SanDisk USB stick — and answering the three questions everyone asks

“My USB drive was accidentally exposed to heavy rain while connected to my laptop, and unfortunately remained soaked for several hours before I found it. It's now not recognised by any PC. Question one: is it possible? Almost always — because of where flash keeps its data
The two aggravating details here — powered while wet, and months before help — are genuinely the bad versions of both variables. Water on a live circuit doesn't just sit there; it conducts, shorting neighbouring signals and stressing the controller, and every damp week afterwards grows corrosion across joints and traces. By the time this stick reached us, its board-level electronics were, unsurprisingly, beyond persuasion. And yet the honest answer to his first question was still an unhesitating yes, very probably — because a flash drive's data doesn't live in any of the parts that water kills easily. It lives in the NAND memory itself: sealed silicon whose stored charge is untouched by moisture on the board around it. Rain kills receptionists; it very rarely kills the library.
The recovery — around the dead electronics, not through them
After decontamination and inspection confirmed the controller path unrecoverable, the memory was addressed directly. The NAND was accessed at chip level and read out raw on the PC-3000 Flash and Flash Extractor — a dump of everything the stick had ever been told to remember, in the controller's private dialect. Reconstruction then translated it back: heavy error-correction first (flash read at this level always arrives noisy, and a stressed device noisier still), the controller's scrambling reversed, the page and block structure established, and the translation layer rebuilt with the VNR's toolset until the raw dump resolved into the ordinary FAT32 volume the customer used to plug in. His files were extracted from it, verified by opening across each type, and delivered on a new stick — with the old one retired to a labelled bag, its recovery career complete.
Questions two and three, answered straight
Cost: chip-level flash work is priced by the engineering, not the gigabytes — a fixed quote follows the free assessment, before any work, and, where a chip has to be removed, 50% of parts and labour is payable upfront with the balance only on success; a dead-on-arrival stick costs nothing to have answered honestly. Typical percentage: when the NAND is intact — the situation in most liquid cases, this one included — recovery runs at or near complete; meaningful losses arise mainly where the chip itself was damaged or where heavy corrosion has sat unattended for very long periods. Wet devices keep their data patiently, but they don't keep their options patiently. Weeks are kind; seasons are not.
If a stick or card gets soaked
Unplug it — never test a wet device with power, and if it was powered when soaked, don't power it again at all. Skip the rice, skip the radiator; gentle air-drying in a bag, then to a lab within days or weeks rather than months. And treat USB sticks as couriers, not archives: they're the most losable, drownable, snappable objects your data can live on.
