One visit, two patients: a 4TB drive missing from the BIOS, and a USB stick bent in its port
Storage failures travel in company more often than you'd expect. This customer arrived with his main storage drive — vanished simultaneously from Windows, Disk Management and the BIOS itself — and, while he was at it, the USB stick that had been bent in a front port and never read again. The two faults had nothing in common except an owner, which makes them a useful pair to document.

“My 4TB internal drive just disappeared from Windows — it doesn't appear in Disk Management or the BIOS. No mechanical noises; it spins up to speed in a USB enclosure but comes up with a device error. It's my data storage drive, no boot system on it. I've also got a memory stick which got bent in the PC and doesn't read any more.”
The drive: spinning, silent, and absent
A drive that spins normally yet fails to appear even in the BIOS has failed at the introduction stage: it never finishes becoming ready. On WD drives of this family the usual culprit is the service area — the drive's firmware home on the platters. Damage or corruption in critical firmware modules leaves the drive unable to initialise its translator, so it simply never answers the system's roll-call, however healthy it sounds. On the PC-3000 Express, exactly that presented: electronics and ROM healthy, but the drive stalling on service-area access. Working in the WD utility, the service area was examined copy by copy — critical firmware structures are stored redundantly — and the damaged modules repaired from their intact counterparts until the drive initialised, reported its full 4TB, and came ready.
Ready is not trusted. The drive went straight to Data Extractor for a full image before its firmware had any opportunity for a relapse, the customer's NTFS storage volume mounted from that image, and his file set — the drive was, in the classic way, the "everything drive" — extracted and verified complete.
The stick: a hardware injury, not a data one
The bent USB stick was the opposite kind of patient: its memory contents were almost certainly untouched, but the connector's leverage in the port had cracked the solder joints and stressed the fine traces where connector meets board — the reason it fell silent instantly rather than degrading. Under the microscope the damage matched the story: fractured joints, a lifted trace. It was repaired at the micro-soldering bench — joints reflowed, the broken trace jumpered — with one strict rule attached: a repair like this earns one careful, complete read, not a return to service. Powered through current-limited monitoring, the stick enumerated, and was immediately imaged in full on the Atola TaskForce 2. Had the flexing damage reached the board's inner layers beyond economic repair, the fallback existed — reading the memory chip directly, off-board — but it wasn't needed.
Outcome
Both devices, full recovery, one collection. The pairing makes the point better than either case alone: identical-looking symptoms — a device that just stops appearing — can be a firmware fault needing platter-level surgery on one device and a cracked solder joint on another. What they shared was the correct response, which the customer got right twice: no repeated retries, no utilities, no force. Just both patients delivered still-recoverable.
Front ports and protruding sticks
A USB stick left in a front port is a lever waiting for a knee. If one gets bent, don't straighten it and try again — flexing the board a second time is how cracked joints become torn traces and a soldering repair becomes chip-level surgery. And when any drive vanishes from the BIOS: stop swapping cables and enclosures after the second try. The fault is inside, and retries have nothing to offer it.
