The moment this enquiry describes happens thousands of times a day, and deserves an honest page more than a sales pitch. His SD card came up faulty on his Mac — images no longer appearing in any folder — so he downloaded recovery software, which worked well enough to find his photographs and return a few of them… whereupon it stopped: the free tier's 2GB ceiling, with an invitation to pay what he called "extortionate amounts" to continue. The freemium model, decoded without malice — and the two questions that actually decide

The 2GB wall isn't a scam; it's a demonstration model. The free tier exists to prove the software can see your files — the most persuasive advert ever devised, delivered at your moment of maximum need — and the paid tier removes the ceiling. Nothing dishonest is occurring; the pricing simply lands at the worst possible emotional moment, which is why it reads as extortionate at 11pm over a client's shoot. The fair decision framework has two questions. One: is the device healthy enough for software to finish the job? His preview said maybe — the software could see and return images — but "faulty card" is a spectrum, and consumer tools that preview well can still stumble across a degrading card's worst regions, with every full-scan pass wearing the patient. Two: what does the outcome need to be? For personal snaps, "most of them back" from a £60–£100 licence is often a perfectly rational purchase, and this page says so plainly. For a client deliverable in RAW, the requirement isn't "most" — it's a verified, complete-as-possible set, recovered without gambling further card wear on a desktop scan, with someone accountable for the result and a fixed price known in advance. Ask the two questions: is the device actually healthy, and does this job need "most files" or a verified set?
