This enquiry asked the sharpest question a twice-disappointed customer can ask. His 128GB microSD — from a Sony camcorder, less than half full of video — had already been to two recovery companies: a local firm who ran a scan, and a national laboratory whose final word was that there is no pinout code for the device — "I'm not really sure what that means," he admitted. Neither, he noted, could really articulate what they'd tried. So his question to us was exactly right: "Don't want to waste your time if you will try the same thing." Fair. What a pinout is — and what "no pinout code" honestly means

A modern microSD is a monolith: controller and memory sealed in one wafer, and when its controller dies, recovery means reaching the memory directly through the card's hidden test points — microscopic contacts under the surface, arranged differently by every manufacturer, production run and revision. The map of which point carries which signal is the pinout, and the industry's working method is a lookup: expose the points, photograph the pattern, match it against shared databases of known maps. The national lab's verdict now translates exactly: this card's pattern wasn't in the database — a true, honest statement about the lookup, routinely delivered as though it were a statement about the card. It isn't. An unmapped monolith is unmapped the way an uncharted coastline is uncharted: nobody's drawn it yet. The differentiating capability — and the direct answer to his question — is manual pinout derivation: identifying the signals empirically, point by point, by their electrical character and behaviour, tracing power, ground, data and control lines with instruments rather than photographs until the card's private map exists for the first time. Slower, harder, genuinely specialist — and precisely what "we'd try the same thing" would not be. That answer went to him in writing before any quote did, because his question deserved to be the assessment's first deliverable.

The recovery — charting the coastline

The card's test points were exposed and the derivation ran: the pattern mapped signal by signal against the VNR's instrumentation, the working map validated on low-risk lines before anything consequential was asked of it, and then — map in hand — the memory read out in full, the dead controller bypassed for good. Reconstruction performed the controller's abandoned duties offline: error correction, descrambling, layout, translation; and the camcorder's filesystem rose from the raw dump with its video files intact. Sixty-plus gigabytes of footage came back playable — verified by watching sequences across the card's span, start to finish — and was delivered on new media, along with two documents his history had earned: the recovery report, and the answer to his original question, now demonstrated rather than promised.

Outcome

Full recovery on the third attempt — and the consumer guidance his journey paid for, published for everyone holding a similar verdict. First: "no pinout available" means the map wasn't on file, not that the data is unreachable — it's the point where database-driven recovery ends and derivation-capable recovery begins, and it's exactly the right moment to ask a prospective third lab this customer's question: what would you do differently? A firm with a real answer will name the method; a firm without one will re-run attempt two at your expense. Second, his other observation — that neither prior firm could articulate their methods — is itself a screening tool: labs doing real work can describe it, in writing, before quoting. And the standing mercy of monolith cases holds through any number of attempts: the memory doesn't wear out waiting. His footage sat unchanged through two verdicts. The third one just came with a map.

After a "no pinout" or second failed attempt

Ask the next lab the question this customer asked — what, specifically, would differ — and expect "manual pinout derivation" or an honest referral, not vague reassurance. Get prior findings in writing; a genuine "not in the database" verdict saves the next lab a step. Don't let anyone re-run software scans against a chip-level problem, and keep the card untouched between attempts — monolith memory is patient, and undocumented is not the same as unrecoverable. It just means nobody's drawn the map yet.
