The translation — who's actually speaking in that error
The message reads like Windows giving up; it's actually Windows quoting. When the operating system asks a drive for data, the drive answers with the data or with a status code — and "fatal device hardware error" is Windows relaying the harshest code in the vocabulary: the drive itself declaring that the requested operation failed at the hardware level, unrecoverably, after its own internal retries were exhausted. Not a driver quirk, not a Windows fault, not a cable — the device reporting its own condition, which her three-laptop elimination had already proven by taking everything else off the table. And the half-visibility that made it confusing resolves cleanly on the same reading: a drive's identity — name, model, capacity, the free-space figure — is served by its electronics from small, robust records, cheap to read even on a failing unit, which is why it populated File Explorer, Disk Management and the eject menu so politely. The contents require sweeping the actual surfaces, and that's where the hardware was failing fatally, request after request. She was seeing the drive's business card while its filing room burned.
