"Local Disk": the drive that lost its name — annotated by way of its owner's own CHKDSK log

“My 1TB My Passport is no longer recognisable by my computer a lot of the time. There's about 450GB of photos on there I need to recover. The computer sees it as 'Local Disk', though Device Manager shows it as a My Passport. CHKDSK shows: file records processed… examining file name linkage… correcting error in index… free space marked as allocated in the bitmap…”
The log, translated line by line
Start with the symptom above the log: a drive appearing as generic "Local Disk" has stopped presenting its volume's identity — Windows can see a device but can't read the label off the tin, the first sign the tin itself is becoming hard to read. Then the log. "File records processed / file verification completed" — stage one is inventory, read-mostly and gentle; the counts even confirm his photo library's records still existed. "Examining file name linkage" — stage two cross-checks the paperwork. And then the line where the character of the tool changes: "Correcting error in index…" — from here CHKDSK is no longer examining but writing, performing filing-cabinet repairs directly onto media whose intermittent vanishing act was the real disease. "Free space marked as allocated in the bitmap" means the volume's accounts don't balance — genuine damage, but damage that is a symptom. The recovery
He stopped soon enough. On assessment the intermittency traced to the familiar spiral of this drive family — service-area firmware structures degrading in step with the media, the drive struggling ever longer to bring itself online (hence the sometimes-there, sometimes-not behaviour, and the anonymous "Local Disk" when it half-managed it). Through the USB Stabilizer, the PC-3000 stabilised the firmware and retired the drive's self-maintenance; Data Extractor then took the single complete image the whole saga had been waiting for, and the filesystem — including the inconsistencies CHKDSK had found and the alterations it had begun — was reconciled on the copy. If you run CHKDSK on a drive that matters, run it read-only first (chkdsk with no switches examines without repairing), treat any "correcting…" line on a suspect drive as your cue to stop and image, and treat a drive that's intermittently detected as disqualified from repair tools altogether — a patient that keeps leaving the table mid-operation. The log always tells you. It just tells you in its own language, and now you speak a little of it.
CHKDSK on a drive you care about
Examination before repair: no-switch CHKDSK looks without touching; /f and friends write. Never point repair switches at a drive that's failing to appear reliably, showing as "Local Disk", or making any sound it didn't used to. And if a scan is underway when doubt arrives — stopping mid-examination costs nothing; letting repairs grind on can cost the photos.
