Who crashed whom — and why there's no such thing as "just fix it": a beeping 4TB, two good questions, two straight answers

This enquiry asked two questions this archive loves, because both get asked constantly and rarely answered straight. His Seagate 4TB Backup Plus had been fine until, in one bad evening, his Mac crashed — Finder frozen, hard restart required — and ever since, the drive beeps on every connection and mounts nowhere, across machines, ports and cables. Question one, asked with genuine worry: did the crash and hard restart cause this — "or could it be a software failure?" Answer one: the causality, reversed

His timeline reads naturally as crash → restart → drive broken, and the guilt attaches to the restart. The mechanics read it the other way round. A Finder that freezes solid is very often a Finder waiting — macOS stalled on a storage device that has stopped answering mid-conversation — and a drive whose heads were beginning to fail or seize is exactly the device that stops answering. On that reading, the sequence was drive faltering → Finder hangs waiting on it → hard restart becomes the only exit: the crash wasn't the crime; it was the first visible symptom, and his restart was a reasonable response to a machine his drive had already taken hostage. Answer two: why "just fix it" isn't a smaller job — it's the same job minus the safety

The fix-only plan assumes a drive gets repaired back to health, like a car, then handed over for normal driving. Mechanical recovery doesn't work that way, and honesty about why is the whole answer. Releasing stuck heads (and replacing them where they've suffered — adhesion is rarely free) makes the drive readable at a bench: a convalescent, stabilised and monitored, good for one careful supervised journey — the imaging — during which every sector is copied under management that expects relapses. It does not make the drive a healthy consumer product again; a post-release, post-adhesion mechanism handed back for a desk-side 4TB copy through a USB cable is a patient discharged mid-surgery — no stall management, no error handling, no second chance if it re-seizes an hour in, with his files as the stake. Beeping drives and freeze-then-fail timelines

A beep on connection is mechanical — stop connecting it; each attempt strains the motor against stuck heads. If your machine had been freezing or hanging with the drive attached, log that as the drive's first symptom, not your restart's fault. Skip fix-only thinking: ask for the data on new media, and put any replacement drive you've bought toward delivery. And a Mac that beachballs whenever one particular disk is plugged in is naming its suspect — copy that disk's contents the same day, while it still mounts at all.
