The bank card is innocent: what actually kills microSD cards in wallets — and the recovery of one
The suspect was named in the first paragraph: his 32GB Kingston microSD had travelled "in my wallet between the visa card for about a week" — and afterwards read on nothing: not the phone it came from, not PCs, not a camera, not Windows, Linux or Mac. He arrived unusually well-prepared for the conversation, too: he'd confirmed no visible physical damage, tested the card's power pins for a short circuit (none), and asked three precise questions — do we offer free diagnostics, what does recovery typically cost, and does the examination involve etching the card? Before the recovery, the myth his story rests on deserves formal retirement, because half the internet believes it.

Retiring the magnet myth — and naming the real wallet hazards
Flash memory cannot be erased by a magnet, a bank card's magnetic stripe least of all. The belief is a hand-me-down from a different technology: floppy disks and tapes stored data as magnetic patterns, and magnets genuinely scrambled them. Flash stores data as trapped electrical charge in silicon — there is nothing magnetic to disturb, and a magstripe's feeble static field (which struggles to affect even other magstripes without contact and motion) has no mechanism whatsoever for touching it. Your card can holiday on a fridge magnet unharmed. What wallets actually do is mechanical and thermal: a wallet is a press — sat on, flexed with every stride, compressed in pockets — and a microSD is a wafer of silicon and micro-connections engineered for a phone's padded slot, not for a week of bending loads between stiff cards. Flex cracks internal joints; pressure fractures bonds; pocket heat and the odd static discharge assist. His card's autopsy read exactly so: electrically sound at the pins (his own short-test correctly foretold that) but failing internally, a pressure casualty wearing an urban legend as its alibi.
His questions answered, and the recovery done
In order: diagnostics — free, always, with a fixed written quote before any chargeable work. Typical cost — honestly, "it depends on the fault class" is the only truthful sentence before assessment, which is exactly why the assessment costs nothing: one examination replaces every guess. Etching — the sharpest question of the three: modern microSD cards are monoliths, everything sealed in one wafer, and accessing one does mean carefully exposing the card's hidden test points beneath its surface — controlled, precise, and one-way for the card, which never returns to service, though that's a formality since a card in this state had already retired itself. The data is what comes back, and his did: the monolith's test points mapped against the VNR's references, the memory dumped in full, reconstruction reversing the controller's scrambling and layout, and the phone's photo library rising intact — recovered, verified by opening images across its span, and delivered on new media. The bank card, cleared of all charges, presumably remains in the wallet.

Full recovery, one myth formally retired, one technically-excellent enquirer's questions answered in public where they'll serve the next thousand searchers. The practical residue: carry cards in cases, not wallets — a fifty-pence hard case defeats the actual killers (flex, pressure, static) that the mythical one gets blamed for; and when a card does die in a pocket, skip the magnet post-mortem and the guilt about proximity to bank cards, phones or speakers — none of them did it. The wallet did. It always was the wallet.

Magnets don't erase flash — full stop — so position your worry where the physics is: flex and pressure. Carry loose cards in rigid cases, never bare in wallets or coin pockets; don't "test" a dead card by reseating it dozens of times across devices — your first two attempts told the story; and note any carrying history at enquiry, as this customer did.
