"My simple brain suggests the MBR needs rebuilding": half right, and the half that mattered was the other one

The enquiry ended with a self-deprecating diagnosis — "my simple brain suggests the MBR or FAT needs rebuilding" — from a customer whose brain had, in fact, done rather well. His little Sony home server hadn't shut down properly in a power cut some weeks earlier and now demanded a format, reporting "0.0GB of 0.0GB" of storage. He'd removed its two 500GB drives and tried them over USB, where they appeared as devices but sat stubbornly "not ready". His guess about rebuilt structures was half the answer. The other half was that his files had never lived on a drive at all.

Two mysteries, two mundane answers

Mystery one — the drives that were "recognised but not ready" over USB — dissolved at the bench without drama: connected natively, on a proper supply, both drives spun up promptly, identified fully, and read cleanly end to end. The likeliest culprit was never the drives but the roadside conditions: a 3.5″ desktop drive demands mains-fed power that many USB adapters simply don't deliver, and a drive starved at spin-up presents to Windows as exactly what he saw — a device present, a disk that never arrives. It's worth a sentence of reassurance to everyone who's met "not ready" through an adapter: it describes the connection at least as often as the drive. Mystery two — the server's "format me, 0.0GB" ultimatum — was the power cut's actual crime scene: the box had been mid-housekeeping when the lights went, and the structures describing its storage were left incoherent enough that the appliance's only remaining suggestion was to start again. His refusal of that suggestion was, as ever in this archive, the decision the recovery was built on.

The half he couldn't have guessed

Imaged and examined, the disks revealed the server's quiet arrangement: it hadn't kept a volume on each drive but had joined the pair into one — a single logical volume laid across both disks in sequence, the box's way of selling one big shelf made of two boards. Which is why no repair aimed at either drive alone could ever have worked, MBR rebuilt or not: half the shelf per disk, and the filing system's records referring freely across the seam. His enquiry earns the closing word for its modesty as much as its accuracy: the customers who say "my simple brain suggests…" are routinely the ones who've reasoned furthest, and the only correction this one needed was the trade's oldest surprise — that little storage appliances divide data in ways their owners were never told. If a box ever pooled, spanned, mirrored or "managed" your drives, its disks are a set. Recover them as one, or not at all.

After a power cut takes out a storage box

Decline every format prompt and keep the drives together as a labelled set — multi-drive appliances routinely span or pool storage across their disks, and a single drive from the set is half a book. If drives show "not ready" through a USB adapter, suspect the adapter's power before the drive, and stop experimenting either way.
