The recorder's drive: recovering recordings that will only ever play in one machine
This customer had done his homework before writing. He'd identified the clicking drive from his TV recorder as a Seagate Pipeline — a model built specifically for video boxes — removed it and done nothing further; he understood his recordings were encoded to the machine and would only play back on it; and he'd reasoned, correctly, that the answer was either repairing the drive or cloning it. “It has stopped working and simply clicks on power-up. I've removed it from the unit but done nothing further. I'd like the recordings off it — which unfortunately are encoded and need to be replayed on the same machine, so it seems this requires either repairing the drive or cloning the disc. Why a recorder's drive is its own genre
His reasoning survives contact with the lab almost untouched. TV and CCTV recorders don't store tidy video files in a friendly format: they write to the disk in their own proprietary arrangements, and many — his included — tie the recordings cryptographically or structurally to the individual unit, so that even a perfect extraction of the raw data yields nothing another machine will play. That inverts the usual deliverable. Years of recordings, watchable again on the only machine in the world entitled to show them — delivered as a drive rather than a folder, exactly as the physics of the situation demanded. Two notes ride along. For anyone with a dead recorder holding something genuinely irreplaceable — a broadcast of a family member, say — this route exists and works, and the same "remove it and do nothing further" discipline this customer showed is what keeps it open. And for everyone: recordings that matter to you shouldn't live solely inside a box that encodes them to itself. If a recording is precious, get it out into an open format while the machine still plays it — because the day the drive clicks, even a good outcome looks like this one: the content rescued, but still captive.
