"You need to format the disk": a working photographer's 128GB card, 17,000 photos, and a paywall full of previews
Early in a photography career, the archive is the career — and this customer's whole recent portfolio, around 17,000 JPEG and RAW frames across many shoots, sat on one 128GB card that suddenly refused to open. Decoding the two messages she'd received
The format prompt first: when Windows says a card "needs formatting", it means it found a device but couldn't make sense of the filing system on it — the index is damaged, not (necessarily) the photographs. It is an offer to erase, phrased as an offer to help, and declining it — as she did — is the single most important decision in any case like this. The preview paywall second: software showing her thumbnails had proven something genuinely useful — the card still reads, and the image data survives — but scanning a card of unknown health over and over while a customer decides about a fee is not a neutral act. The recovery, done in the right order
The rule that separates lab practice from software-on-the-kitchen-table is: one read, then leave the patient alone. Verification sampled across every shoot folder: RAW files opened in full, not just as embedded thumbnails, because a preview proving a file exists and a file that develops cleanly are different promises.

Never format on prompt — the prompt is not a diagnosis. Stop re-scanning a misbehaving card; if software has shown you previews once, the data's there, and further scans only add risk. Offload cards after every shoot rather than letting a season accumulate on one, and retire cards on age, not on failure. Your archive deserves the same professionalism as your shooting.
