Click of death without a cause: a Seagate ST4000DM004 that failed sitting still

Most mechanical case files start with an event — a drop, a knock, a power cut. This one starts with nothing. The drive had lived its whole life bolted inside a case, and one day it spun up, began clicking in a loop, and never appeared in the BIOS again. The customer, refreshingly unsentimental, had already concluded the heads were gone and asked us to quote for exactly that.

Why drives fail with no story

It offends a certain sense of justice, but hard drives don't require a reason you were present for. Read/write heads are aerodynamic structures flying nanometres above a surface moving at motorway speeds, and they wear: coatings degrade, the writer's heater elements fail, a microscopic contamination event years old finally collects its debt. The loop the customer heard is the sound of a drive whose heads can no longer read the servo information that tells them where they are — sweep, fail, retry, forever — and a drive that can't complete that first conversation with its own surfaces never gets as far as introducing itself to a BIOS. His deduction was sound. Our only amendment was procedural: we confirm heads by inspection, not assumption, because preamplifier and electronics faults can wear this exact costume, and a customer shouldn't pay for a transplant a drive doesn't need.

The recovery — and what "modern Barracuda" adds to it

Inspection under laminar airflow settled it his way: head failure, platters unscored. A donor head-stack from the same family and generation went in at the bench. What makes a DM004-era Barracuda a more particular patient than its ancestors comes after the mechanics. These are shingled (SMR) drives with a sophisticated firmware layer brokering between the outside world and overlapping tracks — so before imaging, the drive's firmware state was examined over the PC-3000's terminal to confirm it had come through the failure coherent, and its background housekeeping was shut down; an SMR drive left to its own devices will busily reorganise data precisely when you need it to hold still.

Imaging in Data Extractor was then built around what shingled media prefers: long, orderly, sequential passes on the transplanted heads, banking the great majority of the surface without asking the drive to hop about, followed by targeted returns to the reluctant regions. The customer had offered his own replacement SSD for the results — gladly used — and his file set was extracted from the completed image and verified onto it.

Outcome

Effectively complete recovery, delivered on the customer's own media, at the quoted price for the fault he'd correctly predicted. For everyone else running a drive like this: the unnerving part of the case is its ordinariness. Nothing was done wrong. Nothing could have been done differently. The only protection against the failure-without-a-story is the copy you made before the story started.

When clicking starts, uncaused

Power down at the first loop and resist the diagnostic urge — every retry cycle is head-on-platter time. Don't reseat cables hopefully or try the drive in other machines; a clicking drive isn't misunderstood, it's injured. And treat any drive over a few years old as living on borrowed engineering: the backup you set up this week beats the recovery you commission next year.
