“Signs of bad sectors appeared — access to some files became slow, and copying would drop to zero and freeze. The drive was checked with a surface-scan utility and a repair attempt was made using its refresh mode; the full scan took about a week. What that week actually did

Slow files and stalling copies are a drive telling you its heads are struggling with parts of the media — recoverable, at that stage, with careful handling. A scan-and-repair pass answers that struggle by making the drive read every sector, retry hard on every weak one, and rewrite the failures. On a healthy drive that's a stress test; on a degrading one it's a forced march. For seven days this drive ground its weakening heads across its worst regions, while its firmware frantically logged and remapped defects. The 10–20 second detection delay it developed is the audible result: a drive that now has so much defect-handling and recalibration to wade through that it can barely get itself ready — before a single user file is requested. Imaging a drive that can barely present itself

A drive in this state cannot be cloned by anything that expects a cooperative disk. It went behind the DeepSpar USB Stabilizer 10Gb — essential on this model, which is USB-native and offers no other interface — giving hardware control of power and resets so that every stall could be cleared on our schedule instead of hanging a controller. Through the PC-3000, the drive's self-destructive helpfulness was switched off: no more remapping, no background media scans, no housekeeping. Its only remaining job was to read when asked.

Data Extractor then imaged it the way degraded drives have to be imaged: gently first, thoroughly second. The opening passes ran sequential, long-block reads with minimal retries — banking the healthy majority of the surface quickly and kindly, an approach that suits this drive's shingled recording, which punishes scattered access. The customer had named his priority folders, so a filesystem map steered those extents to the front of the queue. Only with the bulk secured did later passes return to the bad regions, head-aware, with tuned timeouts and per-sector retries, taking what remained a few hard-won reads at a time.

Outcome

Coverage landed in the high ninety-nines, with the customer's priority folders verified file-by-file and effectively complete; the unrecovered remainder sat in the defect regions the original fault had created and the scanning week had enlarged. A fair reading of this case: the drive was always going to need a lab, and the week of scanning narrowed the final margin rather than destroying it — this time. The same week applied to a drive with mechanical trouble rather than media wear routinely ends recovery altogether.

Bad sectors and the repair-tool trap

Surface scanners, refresh modes and "repair" utilities are maintenance tools for drives whose data is already backed up. Pointed at a failing drive that holds the only copy, they force maximum wear at the worst possible moment. If files are slowing down and copies are stalling, the drive is asking to be imaged — once, carefully, by hardware that tolerates its failures — not exercised.
