D Link External Hard Drive Recovery

I am seeking help with a D-Link NAS which seems to have lost the drives, or at least one of them, which I have been storing data on. The first problem came when the D-Link shut down without warning. It booted up again, but when I looked on the directories, I could no longer find one of the drives, and the other appears to be missing a lot of information. I tried to replace the cables on the D-Link, as I understand that helps, and I also tried to connect through the BIOS. The latter system could not see the D-Link at all, never mind the drive. I removed the problem disk out of the D-Link, and then connected it to the motherboard with a SATA cable. I powered everything on, and then went into BIOS. This said that the drive was unreadable. I can hear the drive spinning, so it seems to be ok in that sense, but after running a recovery disk, it seems that I could recover some of the files, but not others – just like the disk which remained in the D-Link.
I am having a problem with my D-Link Sharecenter which I hope that others can help me with, too. This NAS has been used as a network storage bay for a few months without problems, but recently the family have noticed that it keeps switching IP addresses, meaning that the computer can’t find it on the system and as a result we cannot access the data. It essentially drops off of the network, meaning that the computer can’t see it, and the family can’t access it. We have already turned the server to ‘always’ stay on the same IP address, but this has not allowed us access to the data. Can yourselves recover the all the data from this sick system?

Overheating is another common cause of external hard drive failure. Due to the particular structure of these devices, there is relatively little ventilation that occurs, which means overheating can occur relatively quickly in many instances. Some types of external hard drives will have a small, built-in ventilation fan to prevent overheating, but many devices don’t have any type of safeguard against the problem. Symptoms of overheating within an external hard drive include buzzing and ticking sounds, unrecognizability by the BIOS and seizure.
Just as with internal hard drives, external hard drives can also be damaged due to factors such as viruses, corruption, file deletion or even natural disasters.
How to Care for an External Hard Drive and Handle a Failure
Most people utilize external hard drives because of their portability and convenience, and while all failures can’t be avoided, there are steps that can be taken to care for this particular type of device. The first important step to take is to always back up information stored on an external hard drive, and never rely on it as your primary source of data storage. The second important thing to remember is that if you hear a clicking or buzzing sound when you connect your external hard drive to your computer, remove it immediately and never attempt to connect it again, either to the same computer or a different computer.
At the first sign that an external hard drive failure is occurring, it’s important to contact a professional. In many instances, if a data recovery service is contacted immediately, the data from an external hard drive can be recovered, even in extreme instances, such as the hard drive becoming submerged in water.
